Day53(6/July/2019) 酒田

酒田と言えば本間家。本間家と言えば酒田。庶民に「本間様には及びもせぬが、せめてなりたや殿様に」と言わしめた本間家とは何だったのか以前から興味があった。是非本間家を見てみたいと８３０に宿を出て、まず駅の観光協会で市内地図をもらう。

本間家旧本邸に向かうも９３０からしか開かないようなので、港の見える日和山（ひよりやま）公園へ。酒田は北前船や千石船（150トン積める）の拠点として交易が盛んで、その1/2の船が池に浮かんでいた。これが倍になったとしても想像していたのより小さい。酒田から下関を廻って江戸まで26-27日の行程だったとの事。

また隣にある日枝神社の山王鳥居は、鳥居上部に三角形の木が加わった独特の形をしていた。

10時になったので、本間家旧本邸へ。玄関前の400年の樹齢の松の木が見事である。内部は写真撮影禁止だったが、家の真ん中で武家屋敷と商家造りと別れており、普段家族は商家に生活し、武士との付き合いがある時のみ武家屋敷の部屋を使ったとの事。三代目光丘（みつおか）が立派な人物で、土地、水利事業を行い、このあたりの人々が長年苦しんだ風害軽減のための砂防林の植林に心血を注いだとの事。また藩財政の相談にのり、個人の富を増やすのではなく、酒田とともに発展してきた。本間光丘、覚えておこう。

この家は昭和20年まで本間家が住んでおり、その後、公民館などに利用されたが、今も本間家の所有。本間家は別邸も持っていて、ここは庭園がすばらしい。

本間家というのは、ただただ金持ちだった訳ではなく、酒田発展のために尽力した商人だったわけだ。

場所を移して山居倉庫（さんきょそうこ）へ。これは1893年に酒田米穀取引所の倉庫として舟の積み下ろしが便利なように、最上川の中州に建てられ今でも農業倉庫として活躍中。今や、酒田のシンボルになっている。

ここ酒田は昭和の写真家土門拳の出身地でもあり、「土門拳記念館」にも行ってきた。私は土門拳の「腕白小僧がいた」の文庫写真集を時々ひらいては昔を思い出している。その記念館のある飯森山からの鳥海山の眺めがすばらしかった。

During Edo era, there was a famous business family, Honma, in Sakata city. At that time, people here said “We like to be a lord since it is impossible to be “Honma”.” This family developed the land, conducted water supply/usage development and made sand-protection-forest for local people although those should be done by local lord group. Today I would visit this family’s house which was made sound 250years ago.

Before that, I visited the Hiyori park. Sakata was famous as the base port of cargo vessels which carried the goods from Hokkaido to Osaka/Edo and rice from here to there.

Thanks to this trade, Honma family became very rich. In the pond, 1/2 replica was displayed.

Beside the park, there is Hieda Shirine. The Torii entrance gate is very unique.

In front of Honma family’s house entrance, there was a 400years old pine tree. It was amazing. The family had been living in this house till 1945 and it was sometimes used for public events. This house is still belonging to the family.

Their second house’s Japanese garden was also fantastic!

After that, I visited “Sankyo warehouse” built in 1893. This was built to improve the efficiency of logistic for rice. Rice was gathered from this region by using the river. This warehouse was built in the sandbank of 2 rivers.

I visited the memorial museum of Domon Ken, a famous photographer in Japan too. Today I could see Mt. Chokai from there. It was nice!
